Power Open Tryouts Re-cap

The Pittsburgh Power hosted their second annual Open Tryouts last Saturday at the recently renovated Southpointe Fieldhouse in Canonsburg, PA.  Power Head Coach Chris Siegfried was pleased with the quality of players that came out to showcase their talent. “I really liked what I saw.” Siegfried remarked, of former Penn State Quarterback, Daryll Clark.  Clark, one of 88 players to battle through the seven-hour workout, demonstrated quick feet and an accurate arm, connecting with the majority of the receivers who tried out.  That was, of course, when his passes weren’t being interrupted by former Pitt defensive back Elijah Fields. Fields tried out for the team last year and caught the eye of several coaches, before eventually being cut. “I thought I was faster, more agile, more lean,” Fields said of his performance this year. “I showed them I could really cover today, too.”

Coach Siegfried expects to offer 2 to 4 contracts from Saturday’s workout, once evaluations are wrapped up. One player that was offered a contract on the spot, and accepted, was offensive lineman Justin Wells. Nicknamed by Power staff as ‘Kimbo Slice’, for his uncanny resemblance and his fierce competitiveness, Wells is expected to serve as an anchor on the offensive line next season.  After propelling Saint Augustine’s College into the number one rushing school in the CIAA, Wells drew attention from several NFL teams before signing with the Power. “Justin has a chance to be a dominant force in the AFL,” remarked Coach Siegfried. “We’re thrilled to have him on the team.”
